Online Poker
Tournaments
What
really is an online poker tournament? Online poker tournaments
were the primary factor that influenced the boom of the
online poker game industry.
Online
poker tournaments are very fast-paced and they are very fun
to play in. A single table in standard online poker
tournaments is similar to a microcosm within a big
multi-table tournament.
Players
or gamblers usually play very tight in the first few tables
of online poker tournaments. At least 9 to 10 players will
play on a single poker table. The early play in online poker
tournaments can appear to be very
aggressive.
Strategies In Online Poker
Tournaments
When
playing in online poker tournaments, it is important to know
a few tried and true strategies for playing. If you are a player who has
his eye on the big prize, or if you just want to play long
enough to stay in the money, you must have a number of
strategies up your sleeve.
1. Strategy One
In
online poker tournaments, your opponents will probably be
quite aggressive during the first stages of the poker
game. They want
an early start in the game and will take the chance of
risking everything they had just to have an early
advantage.
This
is where the wise poker player can grab the edge from the
aggressive poker players. If this wise poker player is
holding a monster card, he can quickly turn the tables
around and surprise his opponents.
2. Strategy Two
Another
option is for the poker player to just wait a while and
avoid confrontation with his opponents. He might get rewarded if he
stays out of the firing lane during the early stages. In
this style, survival is the most important thing to do and
not use a gung-ho attitude.
This
particular player would be patient and wait for some of his
opponents to be knocked out before he
pounces. By
doing this he will also be able to observe and monitor
the moves of his opponents and pick up on some of
their "tells." Observing their style
will help you form the proper strategy to win.
By
playing this way the player does not need to win every pot
that comes his way; instead he just needs to win enough pots
to stay in the game.
3. Strategies During The Early Rounds
A
player can usually choose between playing aggressively or
playing patiently during the early rounds of online poker
tournaments. If a player chooses to play conservatively then
he is able to analyze the risk to reward ratio.
Usually,
in the early stages of online poker tournaments, players
will not gain much by bluffing or by playing mediocre;
blinds start off pretty meager and not very high.
A
winner during the early rounds of online poker tournaments
usually will not make much money if he wins the pot and
sometimes when a player commits an error along the way, he
might end up spending much more than he
intended.
The
basic strategy in online poker tournaments during the early
rounds is to move in slow and play patiently. Players only
need to wait until the poker table has only a few opponents
left before revealing his aggressive side. By this time, the
game play is midway and the pot is getting higher and higher
the longer the game is played.
Another
strategy is to make a continuation bet. This kind of bet is
made after the "flop" in online poker
tournaments. After a player has raised the hand before the
flop he has already taken control of the hand. If he took
control of the hand together with a position, his opponents
will usually check to the player.
At
this stage of the game, you place a bet from half the size
of the pot to the full pot. Since the player
already placed himself to raise a pre-flop, his opponents
will tend to assume he has a big hand which is probably a
big pocket pair.
Usually
your opponents will throw their hands in at this point
because of the prospect of facing the big bet that you
placed earlier!
